What is the origin of blue roses?

The blue rose is a relatively new variety of rose, which emerged at the beginning of the 21st Century, thanks to genetic engineering.

Blue roses are very difficult to find in their natural form, which makes them unique, special and, in some way, extraordinary. They were developed using genetic biotechnology a result of customers’ desire to have blue roses.

In order to achieve this, it was necessary to analyse and differentiate the pigments that give colour to flowers. Delfinidina is one of these pigments and is the one that gives plants the colour blue. Its creation in a laboratory was one of the fundamental milestones in this kind of research.

The first initiative in the quest for a blue rose was carried out in 1990 by the Australian company Florigene, which had the financial support of the Japanese drinks company Suntory. They succeeded in isolating the blue gene in flowers, which was first introduced using carnations, in this way obtaining the first blue flowers.

The Japanese company continued with their research and in 2004 the first genetically modified rose with the blue gene was created. This is the origin of blue roses. Later, in 2009 the transgenic blue rose was exhibited at the International Exposition in Tokyo, going on sale that same year. Currently, the company has worldwide selling rights for the product.

The next step was to create preserved blue roses, something which happened shortly after transgenic roses went on sale. Once the transgenic models were on the market, it was easy to treat them chemically so that they preserve their characteristics and their exact colour.
